Every color of the visible light spectrum is now a representation of an awareness campaign. It seems that even the most obscure color, smaragdine is also linked to awareness. Smaragdine is actually an emerald green color signifying mental health awareness. Red is the color to raise awareness about heart disease, pink signifies breast cancer awareness and purple represents awareness for ADHD.

Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism spectrum disorder is represented by various colors in a puzzle piece design. According to the Center for Disease Control (2018), 1 in 59 children are identified as being on the autism spectrum. The rate of children being identified as autistic is increasing. Being that there's an increase in the prevalence of children identified as being on the autism spectrum, it would benefit us to be more aware.
However, I'd like to encourage you that awareness doesn't have to be the final destination. I am hoping that awareness would be a springboard to learning. Learning more about the signs, symptoms and strategies as we interact with people on the autism spectrum.
Let's consider listening to a person's story as they tell us about what it is like caring for a loved one who is on the autism spectrum. Even though there may be similarities in these stories each person is unique. I hope that you will be inspired to move beyond awareness and towards educating yourself about autism spectrum disorder.
