Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that covers a broad range of conditions. It is called a spectrum disorder because it has a range of symptoms. The 3 main characteristics of ASD are challenges with social interaction, communication and repetitive patterns of thoughts and behaviors.
The number of children identified as being on the autism spectrum is rising. According to the Center for Disease Control (2018), 1 in 59 children is identified as being on the autism spectrum. The majority of autistic children also experience sensory processing disorder.
